Project Title: New Theory in Model-Based Design: A Design Foundation Driven by Probability of Design Errors

Project Description: The objective of the project is to effectively control design errors resulting from model errors in the design of engineering products and systems. In particular, Dr. Xi will address model errors caused by inappropriately handling five important uncertainty sources: i) model parameter uncertainty due to the manufacturing tolerance and random loading conditions, ii) model bias uncertainty representing the inherent model inadequacy for simulating the real physical systems, iii) model numeric uncertainty representing the model discretization and convergence error, iv) errors of uncertainty quantification (UQ) algorithms, and v) statistical uncertainty due to the lack of data for uncertainty modeling.
